Daisuke Yamashita was born in Ishikawa Prefecture in June of 1981. He studied information oriented design at Daishoji Jitsugyo Senior High School. After graduating he began working as an assistant photographer for a design company but had to give up his job due to illness. After 6 months of convalescence he began to make silver jewellery, influenced by his father who is an artist working with silver. In 2003 he created his own website and started his own brand as a way of promoting his creations. He began to broaden his activities by showing his work at exhibitions and events. In 2006 he moved his studio to Daishoji in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture where he is presently based.
Strength and finesse coexist in the creations of Daisuke Yamashita. At first glance his works give an impression of sturdiness. Hidden in that sturdiness is delicate craftsmanship. The Nohmen Tiepin is one example of this. According to Daisuke himself, this piece – a recreation of a Noh mask – was extremely difficult to make. “Rough silver is easy to make, but expressing the feeling of smoothness in this Noh mask was very hard to achieve. Giving expression to a human face is especially difficult - something I really came to understand when making this piece.”
Daisuke Yamashita’s commitment to detail allowed him to create the Nohmen Tiepin. We are proud to bring you this and other creations by Ishikawa’s premier silver artist.
