Tombotama, or glass beads in English, are simply colored glass beads with a hollow to allow a string to pass through. According to the historians, the name Tombotama was already in common use by the beginning of the Muromachi era.
Tombotama were seen as a precious commodity throughout history. They were often used in place of money to buy amber and animal skins, amongst other things.
Glass was precious to people across the ages. In Japan, a type of glass called magadama has been discovered in excavations from the Yayoi period. Magadama is said to be the oldest glass in Japan. In the 16th century glass was imported into Japan from Holland and Portugal. Called Bidoro or Giyaman by the people of the time, this imported glass was highly prized. |
